Purple jerseys representing the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society peppered the field of 12,000-plus runners Sunday.

The society represented the largest group of charity runners at the race, totaling 2,200.

A check for $26,000 was presented to the society on behalf of the Disney runners.

Dynamic duo

Husband and wife team Sidney and Jessica Curry left their impression at the marathon. Both ran on behalf of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Sidney has been in remission from Hodgkin's disease for almost three years.

Sidney, 41, of Ocoee, finished in 3:52.16. This is the second marathon the couple has run together.

Veteran's day

Lee Minicus of Orlando finished strong in his 15th marathon. The 75-year-old veteran racer finished second in his age group, 75-79, with a time of 5:28.15. Minicus has competed in almost 70 triathlons and ran his first marathon at age 66.

Donald Lamarree, a 76-year old from Wilmington, N.C., won the division in 5:03.57. George Braceland, 78, of Sanford, finished sixth in 6:20.07.

I do

Some say Disney World is a place where dreams come true. Part of that materialized for Missouri natives Shelly Dickmeyer and Michael Coulter. The couple took wedding vows before the half-marathon Saturday at Cinderella's Castle. Dickmeyer is a 20-year survivor of leukemia.

Etc.

Only three American men have won the Disney marathon since it started in 1994. . . . Leonid Shvetsov of Russia holds the course record at 2:11.50 in 1995. Judit Nagy of Melykut, Hungary, holds the women's record at 2:31.54 in 1995. . . . A record 32,000 people registered and 3,000 runners registered for Goofy's Race and a Half Challenge and ran the half-marathon and marathon, a total of 39.3 miles in two days. . . . The Disney marathon is the 10th largest in the country.
